Compliance Dilemmas

Compliance_dilemmas

This project is a collaboration between the Swedish National China Centre, the China Office of Finnish Industries, a Finnish non-profit organization, and Odebjer Fohlin Associates, a Swedish law firm based in Hong Kong.

“Compliance Dilemmas” arise when individuals or organizations face situations where the laws of different countries impose conflicting requirements, making it impossible to comply with one law without violating another.

Over the past decade, there has been a sharp increase in extraterritorial legislation affecting international trade and investment. Companies that once only needed to consider the laws of a single country now operate in an environment where multiple jurisdictions simultaneously seek to regulate their activities.

The project aims to examine how these dilemmas affect Nordic multinational companies with operations in China, focusing on three key questions:

  • How common is it for multinational companies to encounter Compliance Dilemmas in China?
  • What strategies do companies use to deal with these Compliance Dilemmas?
  • What impact do these problems have on the overall activities of these companies?

The results will serve as support for both the business community and political decision-makers dealing with these issues in Sweden, Finland and within the EU.
